What is the GoPro Hero 5 Black?
The Hero 5 Black is an all-new action camera from GoPro that incorporates the best features of the previous GoPro models and adds a few more new features. Simply saying it is the “Greatest Hits” compilation of GoPro’s creations. So what makes it the best camera ever made? In addition to the same 4K resolution and 30fps video of the Hero 4 Black, the Hero 5 features a touchscreen display, built-in waterproof capabilities and improved audio performance, electronic image stabilization, useful voice controls and GPS. What more could you have asked for?
Design and Accessories
The Hero 5 retains the same rectangular shape as hero 4, but has a matte black and rubbery finish, which makes it easier to hold the camera. It is also a few millimetres bigger in all dimensions than the Hero 4 Black. There is a 2 inch touchscreen display on the back of the camera. The Hero 5 is waterproof even without any additional housing. You can safely take the camera to depths of 10m and if you want to go deeper, you could get a waterproof housing that is available at an extra pricing. In order to keep the internals waterproof, GoPro has reinforced the battery, microSD and connection port covers so that they remain sealed. Another great thing about this camera is that it comes with a new USB Type-C changing port. It also features front and back microphones that can be swapped between for the best performance.
Controls and Screen
There is a button on the side of the camera for power and for changing the shooting modes. The shutter button is on the top. The 2-inch display is nice and bright for outdoor viewing. The menu system has also been changed. Instead of the touch based control systems of the previous models, Hero 5 uses a swipe system that is more similar to those used in smartphones. The touchscreen allows you change the shooting mode, from video to capturing mode and also to change the settings such as the resolution or frame rate.
The camera also features new voice controls. It can understand commands in seven languages. The front LCD displays the resolution, the mode you’re in, battery life and the storage capacity remaining while recording in a particular mode. Hero 5 also features a one-button capture control. So by pressing the shutter button you can turn off the camera, turn it on and begin capturing video, or hold it for three seconds to capture a time-lapse.
Best For Videos And Photos
You can use the Hero 5 Black with your tablet or smartphone over a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The Bluetooth connection allows the companion app, Capture to remotely power on the camera and transferring footage takes place over a direct Wi-Fi connection. You can easily choose the images and videos for saving to your smartphone or tablet for editing or sharing. The app also allows you to select still images from video.
Video and Sound Quality
The Hero 5 Black’s sensor retains the same capabilities as that on the Hero 4 Black. The important addition is the electronic image stabilization, which only works up to 1080p at 60fps. The image quality is as good as that produced by the Hero 4 Black, with vibrant colors and absence of noise. The exposure is brilliant most of the time and chromatic aberration is also well controlled. As far as the sound quality is concerned, Hero 5 supercedes the previous GoPro models. The microphones have the ability to pick up more sound, and the wind reduction allows for capturing functional audio.
Battery Life and Charging
When compared to the older versions, the Hero 5 Black’s battery has a larger capacity, which is beneficial when you have a touchscreen, GPS and electronic image stabilization features. Since the battery is completely different from the older GoPro batteries, you won’t be able to reuse Hero 4 batteries. The battery performance is also better than Hero 4. The Hero 5 Black uses a USB Type-C connection to charge. If you’re planning for a longer shoot, you can carry a spare battery.
By incorporating the best features from older cameras and adding new features, GoPro has created the Hero 5 Black, which is the best camera it has ever produced. The new form factor, waterproofing and electronic image stabilization are fantastic additions that work really well. The image and video quality is top notch and the camera is incredibly easy to use. Moreover, the price of Hero 5 Black is actually less than that of Hero 4 Black cost at the time of launch. So the final verdict is – The GoPro Hero 5 Black is the best all-round action camera you can lay your hands on today.
